Qur'an 1-6

Qur'an 1-6

Qur'an 1:6 is the sixth verse of Surah Al-Fatiha, and it reads as follows:

اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ

Transliteration: Ihdinā as-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm.

Translation: Guide us to the Straight Path.

Explanation:

In this verse, the believer makes a heartfelt plea to Allah for guidance on the Straight Path (الصراط المستقيم, as-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm). This is a direct request for Allah's direction in life, asking for the wisdom, knowledge, and strength to follow the path that leads to righteousness and ultimately to His pleasure and Paradise.

Key Aspects:

  1. The Straight Path: The "Straight Path" refers to the path of truth, justice, and virtue, which is the way of Islam as prescribed in the Qur'an and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is the path that avoids extremes, errors, and deviations, leading to success in both this life and the Hereafter.

  2. Guidance: The plea for guidance is a recognition that humans are inherently dependent on Allah to show them the correct course of action. It acknowledges that, despite our efforts, we are in need of Allah's help to remain steadfast in righteousness.

  3. A Universal Request: This verse is recited in every unit of prayer (Salah) by Muslims, highlighting the importance of constant, mindful supplication for divine guidance. It's not a one-time request but a continual call for support in navigating the challenges of life.

Connection with the Previous Verses:

Surah Al-Fatiha, from the beginning to this point, builds on the theme of dependence on Allah — we begin by acknowledging Allah’s greatness and mercy (1:1–4), declare our exclusive devotion and need for His help (1:5), and then ask for His guidance on the path of righteousness (1:6).

This verse reminds Muslims that no matter how much knowledge or effort we have, ultimate guidance can only come from Allah, who knows the true way to success.
