Why Loving Prophet Muhammad Is a Condition of Faith?
Why Loving Prophet Muhammad Is a Condition of Faith?
ﷺ Love of Prophet Muhammad — Condition of Faith
Islamic Teachings · Authentic Hadith & Qur'anic Evidence
The love of the Prophet ﷺ is not merely an emotion that Muslims are encouraged to feel. It is a condition of faith itself—a pillar without which belief remains incomplete. The Qur'an and Sunnah establish this with such clarity that no honest reader can escape its implication: to claim faith while withholding love from the Prophet ﷺ is to claim a contradiction.
1. The Reasons That Demand Our Love
He is closer to us than our own selves
The Qur'an declares:
Ibn al-Qayyim explained this verse as proof that whoever does not consider the Messenger ﷺ closer to himself than his own soul is not truly among the believers. This closeness is rooted in love—and it demands that the Prophet ﷺ be more beloved to a person than their own self. Only then does one truly bear the title of "believer." This love necessarily leads to complete submission, obedience, and satisfaction with his judgments, preferring his guidance over one's own desires.
He combined every quality that naturally attracts love
Scholars explain that people love someone for one of two reasons: either they possess a quality of perfection (like beauty, courage, or truthfulness), or they have bestowed a favor upon the one who loves them. The Prophet ﷺ combined both to an unmatched degree.
Regarding his physical perfection, the Shama'il al-Tirmidhi records: "Rasulullah ﷺ was so clean, clear, beautiful and handsome, as though his body was covered and moulded in silver. His hair was slightly curled." Ibn Abbas described that "when Rasulullah ﷺ talked, an illumination emitting from his teeth could be seen." He possessed the most perfect outward form.
Regarding his inward perfection, he was the most truthful, the most trustworthy, the most courageous, and the most merciful of all people. His character was the Qur'an itself.
He is the greatest benefactor in human history
He sacrificed his life, wealth, family, and time to deliver Allah's message. He was injured, his face was cut, blood flowed upon it—all so that we could be guided from darkness to light. Through him, Allah saved us from Hellfire and guided us to the path of Paradise. As the scholars state: "It is through the efforts of this beloved Prophet that we are turned from Hell-Fire and guided to the right path."
2. The Hadith That Makes Love Obligatory
The Prophet ﷺ said:
— Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim
The scholars explain that this hadith does not refer to the natural, instinctive love that a person has no control over—like a parent's love for a child. That is beyond one's choice. What is required is the rational, voluntary love that arises from knowledge, contemplation, and understanding of who the Prophet ﷺ is. This is the first degree of faith. The perfection of this love is when a Muslim's emotions become subservient to their intellect in loving him.
The story of Umar ibn al-Khattab clarifies this standard. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, you are more beloved to me than everything except myself." The Prophet ﷺ replied: "No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, you will not have complete faith until I am more beloved to you than your own self." Umar then said: "By Allah, now you are more beloved to me than myself." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Now, O Umar."
3. The Sweetness of Faith Comes Through This Love
The Prophet ﷺ said:
— Sahih Muslim
The scholars comment that this sweetness—the relish of obedience, the ability to bear hardship for Allah's pleasure, and preferring this over the goods of this world—cannot be tasted unless one's love for Allah and His Messenger is genuine and deeply rooted.
4. Signs That Love Is True
Ibn al-Qayyim explained that love of the Prophet ﷺ increases and decreases. It grows through remembrance of him, contemplation of his virtues, and reflection on his perfect qualities. When the heart is filled with his remembrance, love multiplies and yearning intensifies. When one turns away from his remembrance, love diminishes.
The signs of true love include:
Longing to see him
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Some of my followers coming after me will love me very much. They will wish that they could see me, even if they had to spend their wealth, forego their families and sacrifice all their possessions for it."
Loving the Qur'an he brought
Aisha said that the Prophet's character was the Qur'an itself. True love of him means loving the Qur'an—reciting it, acting upon it, and understanding it.
Loving his Companions and family
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Love for the Ansar is part of faith, and hatred of them is disbelief." Love of the Prophet ﷺ necessarily extends to those he loved.
Preferring his guidance over one's own desires
Ibn al-Qayyim explained that this closeness and love "necessarily lead to complete submission, obedience, acceptance, and satisfaction with the Prophet's judgments. It also entails all the natural consequences of love—such as preferring his guidance and commands over one's own desires and choices, and submitting fully to his teachings."
5. The Warning for Those Who Fail
The Qur'an states:
Al-Qadi 'Iyad commented: "This alone is sufficient as an encouragement, a warning, clear evidence, and proof of the obligation to love the Prophet ﷺ, the necessity of making it binding, and the greatness of its importance. Allah Has Rebuked those whose wealth, family, and children are more beloved to them than Allah and His Messenger, and He threatened them. Then He described them at the end of the verse as defiantly disobedient and informed them that they are among those who have gone astray and whom Allah does not guide."
Ibn al-Qayyim added: "If and when a person has something dearer to him than Allah and the Prophet, then he falls within the type of Shirk which Allah will never forgive and He will never guide him."
6. The Moment Love Is Absent
If loving the Prophet ﷺ more than one's own self is a condition of faith, then the moment a person prefers their desires, their comfort, or their own opinion over his guidance, that moment is a moment of deficient faith. The Qur'an does not say such a person has left Islam permanently—faith increases and decreases. But it does say they are in a state of fisq (disobedience) in that moment.
This is why the scholars emphasize that love is proven by action. Claiming love while rejecting the Sunnah is a contradiction. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever loves my Sunnah, loves me; and whoever loves me will be with me in Paradise."
7. Practical Steps to Increase Love
Send blessings upon him abundantly
The Qur'an commands: "Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace" (33:56). The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah sends ten blessings upon him." (Sahih Muslim)
Study his life and character
Knowledge of his perfect qualities and immense sacrifices naturally generates love in the heart. Ibn al-Qayyim noted: "The servant, whenever he increases in mentioning the Beloved and bringing to mind His virtues and meanings that attract love, his love for him multiplies and his yearning intensifies."
Follow his Sunnah in daily life
Every act of obedience to his teachings is an act of love. The Companions demonstrated this by seeking blessings from his relics, kissing his hand, and sacrificing everything for him.
Remember the Hereafter
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The person will be with those whom he loves." (Al-Bukhari & Muslim) The one who loves the Prophet ﷺ will be with him in Paradise.
