Arabic Text and Translation

فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مَرَضًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْذِبُونَ

Transliteration: Fī qulūbihim maraḍun fa zādahumullāhu maraḍan, wa lahum ‘adhābun alīmum bimā kānū yakdhibūn
Easy Translation: "In their hearts is a disease, so Allah has increased their disease. And for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie."

Easy Word-by-Word Meaning

This verse continues the description of the hypocrites, diagnosing their internal sickness and its consequence.

  1. فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ (Fī qulūbihim maraḍun): "In their hearts is a disease..."

    • The disease here is not physical. It is a spiritual sickness. This includes:

      • Doubt about the truth of Islam.

      • Hypocrisy (saying one thing, believing another).

      • Love for evil and hatred for good.

  2. فَزَادَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مَرَضًا (fa zādahumullāhu maraḍan): "...so Allah has increased their disease..."

    • This is a divine law. When a person chooses to harbor a spiritual disease and does not seek a cure, Allah allows that disease to grow.

    • It is a consequence of their own choice. They embraced the disease, so Allah increases them in it.

  3. وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۢ (wa lahum ‘adhābun alīmun): "And for them is a painful punishment..."

    • This is the ultimate result of their spiritual sickness—a painful punishment in the Hereafter.

  4. بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْذِبُونَ (bimā kānū yakdhibūn): "...because they [habitually] used to lie."

    • The root cause of their punishment is identified: lying.

    • This refers to their constant lie of claiming faith while their hearts are empty of it.

Relevance in the Past, Present, and Future

1. Past Relevance: Diagnosing the Hypocrites in Medina

For the early Muslim community, this verse explained the strange and harmful behavior of the hypocrites.

  • Understanding Their Actions: The hypocrites would spread rumors, break treaties, and try to cause division. This verse revealed that this was not just political disagreement; it was a symptom of a deep sickness in their hearts.

  • Divine Justice in Action: When the hypocrites would hear the Quran, instead of being guided, their doubt and hatred would only grow. This verse explained that phenomenon—Allah was increasing their disease as a result of their own stubbornness.

2. Present Relevance: A Warning About Spiritual Health

This verse is a powerful mirror for our own spiritual state in the modern world.

  • Identifying Modern "Heart Diseases": The "disease" today can be many things:

    • Constant Doubt: Always questioning Islamic rulings but never seeking answers, leading to a weak faith.

    • Addiction to Sin: Knowing something is haram (forbidden) but continuously doing it, which hardens the heart.

    • Envy and Hatred: Holding grudges against other Muslims, which poisons the heart.

  • The Law of Increase is Active Today: If we feel our hearts becoming harder, if we find no joy in prayer, or if we are easily angered by Islamic reminders, this is a sign that a spiritual disease is growing. Allah increases us in what we choose. If we choose neglect, He will increase us in neglect. If we choose to seek cure, He will increase us in guidance.

  • The Cure is Sincerity: The opposite of the lying that caused their punishment is truthfulness (Sidq). Being honest with Allah and ourselves about our shortcomings is the first step to curing the heart's disease.

3. Future Relevance: The Eternal Consequence

This verse connects our present choices to our eternal future.

  • A Spiritual Law with Eternal Impact: The disease of the heart, if left untreated, does not just affect our life in this world. It leads to the "painful punishment" of the Hereafter. This is the ultimate consequence of a life built on the lie of insincere faith.

  • A Motivation for Repentance: Knowing that Allah "increases the disease" should frighten us into seeking a cure immediately through sincere repentance (Tawbah), reading the Quran, and doing good deeds to soften our hearts.

  • The Final Exposure: On the Day of Judgment, the lie they lived will be exposed for all to see, and it will be the reason for their punishment. Their own deception will be their own undoing.

Conclusion

Quran 2:10 is a profound lesson in spiritual health.

It teaches us that:

  1. Hypocrisy is a dangerous disease of the heart, not just a social act.

  2. Allah's law of increase is always in effect. He will increase us in whatever direction we choose—toward faith or toward disease.

  3. The root of the problem is lying, especially to oneself and to Allah about one's true beliefs and intentions.

This verse is a urgent call to regularly check the health of our hearts, to be utterly truthful in our faith, and to seek Allah's cure before the disease becomes incurable and leads to eternal loss.
