Full Explanation in Easy English

This verse describes the characteristics of the Fasiqoon (the defiantly disobedient) mentioned at the end of verse 2:26. These are the people whose arrogance leads them to be misled. ALLAH now lists their three major crimes that make them "the losers."

  1. "Those who break the covenant of ALLAH after its confirmation..."

    • This is the first and greatest crime. What is this "covenant"?

      • The Universal Covenant: Before we were born, ALLAH took a pledge from every human soul, asking, "Am I not your Lord?" and we all replied, "Yes, we testify." (This is mentioned in Quran 7:172). This is the primary covenant to worship ALLAH alone.

      • The Covenant of Faith: After a person accepts Islam, they are in a covenant with ALLAH to follow His commands.

      • The Covenant of Reason: ALLAH has given us intellect (`Aql) to recognize truth from falsehood. Using that intellect to deny ALLAH is breaking this covenant.

    • Breaking it "after its confirmation" means they knew the truth, acknowledged it, and then willfully turned away.

  2. "...and cut what ALLAH has ordered to be joined..."

    • This means severing relationships and bonds that ALLAH has commanded us to maintain. This includes:

      • Family Ties (Silat al-Rahim): Being dutiful to parents and keeping good relations with relatives.

      • The Bond of Believers: The brotherhood and sisterhood of faith, helping and loving each other for the sake of ALLAH.

      • The Connection with ALLAH: Cutting the connection by abandoning prayer, remembrance of ALLAH (Dhikr), and the Quran.

  3. "...and spread corruption on earth."

    • "Al-Fasad" (corruption) is any action that disrupts the peace, harmony, and justice that ALLAH wants on Earth. It includes:

      • Moral Corruption: Spreading indecency, promoting sin, and normalizing evil.

      • Social Corruption: Injustice, oppression, lying, and cheating in business.

      • Environmental Corruption: Destroying the environment and wasting resources, as we are considered trustees of the Earth.

  4. "It is they who are the true losers."

    • The word "Al-Khāsiroon" (the losers) is very powerful. In the context of the Quran, a loser is not someone who loses a game or a business deal. A true loser is someone who gains the whole world but loses their soul and eternal happiness in the Hereafter. Their loss is permanent and total.

Relevance in the Past, Present, and Future

1. Relevance in the PAST (7th Century Arabia):

  • The pagan Arabs of Mecca were guilty of all three crimes:

    • They broke the covenant of Tawheed (monotheism) established by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and worshipped idols.

    • They cut family ties, burying their daughters alive and engaging in tribal wars.

    • They spread corruption through injustice, usury (Riba), and oppression.

2. Relevance in the PRESENT (For Us Today):

This verse is a mirror for our modern society. We must ask ourselves if we are committing these crimes:

  • Breaking the Covenant Today:

    • When we prioritize our desires, money, or status over our duties to ALLAH, we are breaking our covenant.

    • When we know prayer is obligatory but consistently abandon it, we are breaking our covenant.

  • Cutting What ALLAH Joins Today:

    • Family Breakdown: Estranged families, disrespect to parents, and neglecting relatives are rampant.

    • Social Breakdown: Hatred, racism, and backbiting within communities sever the bonds of faith.

    • Individual Breakdown: When we are too "busy" for the Quran or the mosque, we cut our own connection with ALLAH.

  • Spreading Corruption Today:

    • Spreading fake news and gossip on social media.

    • Corruption in business and politics.

    • Polluting the environment and engaging in excessive consumerism.

    • Promoting ideologies and lifestyles that directly oppose Islamic values.

3. Relevance in the FUTURE:

  • The Ultimate Accounting: On the Day of Judgment, these three crimes will be the core of the case against the "losers." They will have no excuse for breaking their primary promise to their Creator.

  • An Eternal Warning: The title "Al-Khāsiroon" will be sealed for those who embody these traits. Their loss is not for a limited time but for all of eternity in the Hereafter, which is the ultimate future.

Key Takeaways for a Contemporary Believer:

  • Renew Your Covenant: Constantly renew your faith by saying "La ilaha illallah" and striving to live by it. Your primary relationship is with ALLAH.

  • Mend Your Ties: Actively work on connecting with your family, your Muslim community, and, most importantly, with ALLAH through prayer and Quran.

  • Be a Builder, Not a Destroyer: Strive to be a source of good (Muslih) in your community. Do good deeds, speak the truth, and stand for justice. Leave every place better than you found it.

  • Check Your Balance Sheet: In the business of life, make sure you are gaining good deeds for the eternal life to come. The one who loses their soul is the ultimate loser, no matter how successful they seem in this world.

May ALLAH (SWT) protect us from breaking His covenant, severing sacred bonds, and spreading corruption. May He make us among the successful, not the losers. Ameen.
