Arabic Text and Translation

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبْلِكَ وَبِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَ

Transliteration: Walladhīna yu'minūna bimā unzila ilayka wa mā unzila min qablika wa bil-ākhirati hum yūqinūn
Easy Translation: "And who believe in what has been revealed to you (O Muhammad) and what was revealed before you, and in the Hereafter they have certain faith."

Easy Word-by-Word Meaning

This verse continues the description of Al-Muttaqin (the people of Taqwa) from the previous verses. It adds three more crucial qualities to their identity.

  1. وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ (Walladhīna yu'minūna): "And those who believe..." This connects directly to the list of qualities from verse 3.

  2. بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ (bimā unzila ilayka): "...in what has been revealed to you..." This is belief in the Quran, the final revelation sent to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

  3. وَمَآ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبْلِكَ (wa mā unzila min qablika): "...and what was revealed before you." This means believing in the original scriptures that Allah sent to previous prophets, like the Torah to Musa (Moses), the Gospel to Isa (Jesus), and the Psalms to Dawud (David). We believe in their original message, not the changed versions that exist today.

  4. وَبِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَ (wa bil-ākhirati hum yūqinūn): "...and in the Hereafter they have certain faith."

    • Al-Ākhirah: The "Hereafter" – the life after death, including the Day of Judgment, Paradise, and Hell.

    • Yūqinūn: This comes from Yaqeen, which is the highest level of certainty. It is a faith so strong it is as if you can see it with your own eyes.

So, this verse tells us the Muttaqin have:

  1. Belief in the Quran.

  2. Belief in all previous divine books in their original form.

  3. Unshakable certainty in the Hereafter.

Relevance in the Past, Present, and Future

1. Past Relevance: Defining the Universal Muslim

When this verse was revealed, the Muslim community included Jews, Christians, and pagans who had just embraced Islam.

  • A Bridge to Other Faiths: It taught the new Muslims to respect all the prophets that came before. It was not a new religion rejecting the old ones, but the final, complete version of the same eternal message of "worship One God." This fostered respect and provided common ground for dialogue.

  • A Strong Foundation for the First Muslims: Belief in the Hereafter with Yaqeen (certainty) was their source of incredible strength. When they were tortured, boycotted, and oppressed, they remained patient because they were certain of their reward with Allah in the Hereafter. This life's hardships were temporary compared to the eternal life to come.

2. Present Relevance: Guidance in a Globalized World

For us today, this verse provides a clear and balanced identity in a world of religious diversity and doubt.

  • Belief in All Books Teaches Us:

    • Respect, Not Relativism: We respect Moses, Jesus, and all prophets as great messengers of Allah. This allows us to live peacefully with our Jewish and Christian neighbors. However, we believe the Quran is the final and protected revelation that corrects the changes made in previous scriptures. Our faith is completed with the Quran.

    • Confidence in the Quran: In an age where holy books are analyzed critically, this belief gives us confidence that the Quran is the only scripture that has been perfectly preserved, just as Allah promised.

  • Certainty in the Hereafter Solves Modern Issues:

    • The Purpose of Life: In a world focused on material success, this belief answers "Why are we here?" We are here to be tested for our eternal home in the Hereafter. This gives our life profound meaning.

    • Moral Compass: When people think, "No one is watching," morality can collapse. Certainty in the Hereafter means you know you are always accountable to Allah. This builds honesty, integrity, and trust in society.

    • Contentment and Mental Peace: It helps us cope with life's inequalities. Why do good people suffer? Why are corrupt people successful? The answer lies in the perfect justice of the Hereafter. This certainty brings peace to the heart, knowing that no good deed is ever wasted and no injustice will be overlooked.

3. Future Relevance: The Key to Eternal Success

This verse points our focus to our ultimate destination.

  • A Lifelong Goal: We spend our lives striving to achieve Yaqeen (certainty) in the Hereafter. This is done by remembering death, reflecting on the signs of Allah in the universe, and doing good deeds that strengthen our faith.

  • The Reality of the Future: The "Unseen" (Al-Ghayb) we believe in today will become our reality tomorrow. On the Day of Judgment, this Yaqeen will become sight. Those who lived with this certainty in their hearts will be the successful ones.

  • A Unified Ummah: The belief in all prophets and all books unites Muslims across the world, regardless of nationality or race, under the banner of the final message to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). This unity is crucial for the future of the Muslim community.

Conclusion

Quran 2:4 completes the picture of a person with Taqwa. It shows that a true believer has:

  • A balanced faith that respects all previous prophets while holding firmly to the final truth of the Quran.

  • A visionary outlook that lives for this world while having an unshakable certainty in the next.

This combination protects us from narrow-mindedness and from being swept away by the temporary pleasures and pressures of this world. It is the recipe for a successful, purposeful, and peaceful life that leads to eternal happiness.
